Alec McPherson, LCSW, CADC
Licensed Clinician
Alec (he/him) is a licensed clinical social worker. Alec works with individuals from across the spectrum of age and presenting issues, ranging from anxiety and depression to examining and changing one’s relationship to substances. Alec’s work is psychodynamic, solutions-focused and client centered.
As a graduate of Smith College, Alec is trained in a range of modalities with a specific emphasis on the psychodynamic tradition of investigating the forces of the mind to discover the consciousness and agency to live a self-directed life. Alec pays close attention to the cultural and social forces that shape our interiority; as a therapist Alec focuses not just on symptoms but how they show up as recursive themes in the deeper narratives that shape our lives.
Alec also incorporates aspects of Liberation Psychology which understands and views our struggles as inseparable from our historical and material conditions. These are the systems we live in, and under, and they can create strengths as well as vulnerabilities. They are the water in which we swim. They range from the concrete (political, economic, familial) to the socially constructed (culture, identity, masculinity) and they have an impact on our daily lives and psychic functioning. Liberation Psychology examines how these systems can inhibit or broaden our capacity for expression, communication and relationship.
Alec believes we learn, heal and grow in relationship. To Alec therapy means change, not merely adjustment. With Alec you will be met with respect, patience and curiosity but you will also be encouraged to explore what lies outside your zone of comfort, for that is where change happens.
